Customer Review: If You're Lazy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands!
Summary: 5 Stars

As a morbidly obese man I often struggle to do most of life's simplest tasks. Like walking. And breathing. So, when my tremendous weight eventually caused me to be bed-ridden 100% of the time, I knew that my life of convenience was over.

Thanks to some supportive friends who would bring me food everyday it wasn't long before I had completely adapted to my new home bound lifestyle. But there were still a few problems.

My grabbing stick was fine for helping me pick up French fries off of the floor, or for changing the channel on the TV, but turning a light switch was proving to be a challenge. There were many nights when I'd have to eat my gallon of ice cream in total darkness.

One of my neighbors, who stops by every day to make sure I haven't died, knew about my light switch problem and offered a suggestion:

THE CLAPPER!

I can't believe I'd never heard of this thing until now. All you have to do is plug it into any standard light socket (my neighbor did this for me), plug in any household appliances into the device (my neighbor had to do this for me, too), and then that household appliance is now activated by the sound of my hands clapping together. The best part about The Clapper is that I can turn two appliances on and off with just one of these handy devices.

It took me awhile to figure out the timing of the claps (The Clapper is very sensitive), but fortunately I need to take a break after each clap to catch my breath, so the necessary pause between claps works out.

Just remember when using The Clapper that sequence is more important than volume, which is good because my meaty hands have trouble producing a really loud clap.

I wouldn't recommend the health issues, boredom or infected bedsores that come with being a bed-ridden fat man, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Clapper to anyone who doesn't like to (or can't) stand up and turn on a light switch.

Customer Review: More like "The ClapCalp.. CLAPCLAP...CLAP...CLAP...er"
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased one of these for my fiance for our bedroom so we could kill the lights after we read bedtime stories without getting out of bed. We both were pretty excited about this doohickey. The first night we tried it out, we couldn't even get it to turn on. Shamefully I had to read the manual. Big guy no-no. Evidently, you have to have solid, loud, and perfectly spaced claps. I don't know if it is the acoustics in our room or what but it is a rare occasion that it "Clap On Clap Off"s. One would think that something so touchy to turn on would have no problem staying off, right? Not so much. Weird crap turns it on. Sometimes a couple of coughs will do it. Another time, it activated from bed-noise during review-censored activities. Also, in the morning right after you wake up: not the best time for 1- loud noise 2- clapping or 3- trying to time those claps in any way shape or form.
My advice; pay the extra and get the one with the remote, get a string, and tether the remote somewhere handy so you wont lose it.
My better advice; thought there is no clapping feature, there is a similar device my mom introduced me to this last holiday; a remote control on/off switch for the x-mas tree lights. It plugs into the outlet and therefore can be used with anything. It was just marketed for the tree lights. There is no clapping required, it runs about half the price, and it is not a bulky white 70's looking thing hanging from the wall. I'm not sure the name of it, but with a little hunting, I'm sure it is easily found.

Customer Review: Would have been great if someone else owned it
Summary: 2 Stars

The things works, sometimes, and it is scarry when it malfunctions. Think, for instance, about a device that doesn't want to work right because the batteries are low or because it has simply slipped and crossed wires somewhere. Imagine you are taking a shower, and a light suddenly comes on without any provocation. You think "it must have been something outside that set off the clapper (because that CAN happen if you have some really evil neighbors with really loud cars)" but it goes off almost as if reading your mind. disturbed, you slow your roll a little and try to arm yourself with the straightening gel or something else that would surely take down a hardened crinminal, and then realize that you don't want to fight this way.
No, you really aren't dressed for Mortal Combat.

It sounds silly but it happen to me one time and, since then, the device seems to have suddenly fallen out of all my house's ligghts. If someone replaces them, they seem to disappear in a weird way, like we have a prowler that only takes clappers (and only hides them iin the garbage where nobody could find them because they are deep down there).

And I'm not sure if they malfuction much, but I once wanted one of these really badly. I loved the idea and thought I could deal with any problems that occurred but that was not what I had in mind.
Much like a "ho, ho, ho" Santa I heard once go low on batteries and sound like Satan Claus, this device needs some work.

Customer Review: Very convenient
Summary: 5 Stars

Update: after using it for a week I am going to have to unplug it. It was purchased for the tv-rec room, and it just doesn't work there. If any noises on the tv are in the same cadence as its activation stimulus it will turn off. It didn't happen just once; it happened frequently. I was considering getting another for my bedroom, but I don't want it coming on every time I turn over to the other side. Not so convenient after all I'm afraid. New rating: 2 stars, and that's generous.
***
I needed a way to turn on the light before I walked halfway into the tv-rec room to reach the lamp and this does the job. I have only had it a week, but I love its convenience. It took me a couple of days to get the timing right, but now it works with hardly ever a miss. It is in a position where the red light is visible from the entryway and that helped me get the pattern. As soon as I see the red light respond to the first clap I immediately clap again. That gives the correct pause between claps. It is designed to prevent unintentional activation, and it doesn't work if the second clap is too soon or too late.

Customer Review: Useful Product
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a very useful gift if you have any seniors in your life. A dark room can be like an obstacle course for them if they need to get up in the middle of the night for any reason. However, it is not practical to leave lights burning all night if you're on a fixed income. This product allows them to turn a light on and off with a clap of the hands. It is incredibly useful for them, and will be appreciated as part of a care package or gift.

One thing you need to know, though, if you're ordering this from H.T.F. Things, is that they do not respond to the Amazon function where you can ask a seller what's happening with your order. I don't know why this is, maybe the email attached to that part of their account is no longer active. If you want to order this for your friend or neighbor, save yourself some anxiety and have it shipped to yourself first, instead of directly to the giftee. That way, you can make sure the item has the price tag removed and you can order a confirmation of delivery from the Post Office when you send it on, for your own peace of mind.
