Customer Review: Lots of features makes it great!
Summary: 4 Stars
Any one of the individual features (radio, mirror, clock, razor storage shelf, mp3 player transmitter) would only be worth only 2 or 3 stars by itself, but I think this is a case where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. There are so many features packed into this unit that I just wouldn't feel right giving it less than four stars as a whole. I should also mention that I got it on clearance at Bed Bath & Beyond and paid substantially less than the Amazon price for it. If I paid more for it, I might be more critical. I will address each feature separately.
RADIO - 3 stars for average
The reception isn't great, and unfortunately my favorite station cuts in and out so I had to switch to listening to another station in the morning. My wife picks up two stations that she likes on it. When it does find a station with good reception, the sound is great for a shower radio. I didn't really expect much in terms of sound quality, and am pleased that it sounds better than the average alarm clock radio. It would have been nice if they included an AM receiver so I could listen to sports or talk radio too. As someone else mentioned, if you spray water directly on the mirror, that will plug up the speaker sound holes and the sound will be muffled until they clear, so don't spray water directly on the unit.
FOG-FREE Mirror - 2 stars for poor
The only thing this mirror has going for it is the size. I have been through several of these supposedly "fog-free" mirrors over the years, and they all fog up. At least this one is good sized, and it doesn't show a distorted image like some other shower mirrors I have had. Incidentally, I have found a way to get around the fog problem. Just wipe the mirror with some suds (body wash or shampoo, doesn't matter). For some reason, when the suds drip off, they must leave behind a film because the mirror doesn't fog up anymore after doing that. Don't spray water on the mirror to clear it because that will plug up the speaker holes and muffle the sound.
CLOCK - 4 stars for great
First of all, it shows through the mirror, so there is a coolness factor. The blue digits look pretty cool too. If they added an alarm clock or timer function it would be perfect and I would give it 5 stars.
RAZOR SHELF - 2 stars for poor
I like the fact that it is covered, which might help extend the life of lubricating strips on razors, but it is just too small. It is probably just fine for a typical disposable razor, but my permanent razor holder with extra blades won't fit in it so I don't use it. I haven't convinced my wife to use it yet either. I think she is afraid she will forget about that storage slot and end up getting a new razor instead of using the one already there.
MP3 PLAYER TRANSMITTER - 5 stars for perfect
I don't know why other people have reported problems with interference on the MP3 player transmitter. I haven't had any problems, and I haven't had to experiment with other channels. In fact, I don't even know if the other channels work because I have always used channel 1. The bathroom counter where I keep the MP3 player transmitter is probably about 10 feet away, and it comes in crystal clear. Just to experiment with it, I put it out in the living room about 30 feet away and it was still clear. When my wife walks in front of it, there is a little bit of static, but it never cuts completely out. I put a Sade mix on my MP3 player, and I now have very relaxing showers in the evening. I was really only looking for a shower mirror with a radio, so this was a huge bonus.
OTHER STUFF (mounting, unit size, battery life) - 3 stars for average
The suction cups work just fine. In fact, because of the size and arrangement of the tiles in my shower, I could only get two of them to stick at a time and it still holds up just fine. I imagine that the people reporting trouble with the suction cups didn't do them correctly (you have to stick them on the wall first, then lock the hanging tabs out). I give three stars to this section because the case is really bulky. I originally wanted to hang it directly below the hand-held shower head mount, but it was getting in the way of the hose and I had to move it to the back side of the shower. Thankfully my shower is big enough that I don't bump it and it doesn't get in the way on that back wall, but I could see how this might be a problem for someone with a smaller shower. As far as battery life, I have had the unit for about three weeks now, and it gets used four times a day between me and my wife. The batteries are still going strong.
Overall, I am very pleased with this thing and I would buy it again.
