Customer Review: Yeah it works but you could make your own

Our front loading washer is 7 years old and gets used often. We were a family of four when we bought the washer and now are a family of six. Our washer has seen the potty training of three children, cloth diapers for two children, and is used and abused. The seal is coated with the gunk that no one wants to clean. Every once in awhile the washer is run with hot water and vinegar. We quit using bleach when one of the kids was diagnosed with eczema. On a whim, I picked Tide Washing Machine Cleaner up at the store. The directions say to use once a week for washers like mine - with an odor problem or visible residue. Then after three weeks to use once a month for maintenance.
Week 1- no real visible change but the washer does smell nice. Did not notice a difference in the cleanliness of clothes. I must admit. The washer still does a fantastic job at cleaning regardless of the junk on the seal.
Week 2 - Dude. My gunk is practically gone and again the washer smells tide fresh. Hmmm. This stuff actually works.
Week 3 - The seal is clean. Go ahead. Run your fingernails on it and try to find some gunk. Disgusting thought but just getting the point across. No gunk left.
Now, I prefer to make my own laundry detergents so I looked at the ingredients for this product. It's basically an Oxygen Cleaner, Washing Soda, and the last ingredient is sodium sulfate. I believe you could use Borax here. Oh, and they add perfume. Now, the ingredients in my laundry detergent: 1 cup washing soda, 1 cup Borax, and 1 bar of soap (like ivory). And you can add an oxygen cleaner for a booster. Hmm, sound familiar?
All in all, it works. But after looking at the ingredients I realized I'm using the same ingredients in my homemade laundry detergent plus an oxygen booster. What's the difference? I use 1 TB per load and the pouch contains about half a cup or more. And my laundry detergent contains soap. This product doesn't.
If you need a product like this and don't care about the perfume, buy some Washing Soda, Borax, and Oxygen Cleaner (like Oxy-clean or Oxy-Boost) Combine equal amounts in a container with a lid. And once a month, run an empty load with a cup of this mixture. You'll save money and get the same results.
For those of you who ask why I haven't been doing this all along. Here is my answer. I didn't think of it. Now that Tide has brought it to my attention that I can and should be cleaning my washing machine, I will be. But for a whole lot cheaper.
If you don't want to make your own and you can afford it, buy the stuff. I don't think you'll be sorry.
