I've used these for many years after I developed some...ahem...complications during pregnancy. Here's what I've learned that will help keep this problem at bay:
1. Fiber, Fiber, Fiber. The more fiber the better. Not only good for this, but also good for heart health. I use Equate, because they work as well as name brands, but are much cheaper. Equate - Fiber Therapy - Compare to Citrucel - Fiber Therapy for Regularity, 100 Caplets
2. 1 TBS ground flax per day. Trust me on this. This is also good for heart health. Put it into your oatmeal in the morning, or in your cup of yogurt, or put it into bread or cookies. I use Bob's Red Mill Organic Flaxseed Meal, 16-Ounce Packages (Pack of 4)
3. Use Tucks Medicated Pads. They do cool the itch and burn, and help reduce swelling. They are always on my bathroom counter.
4. This might sound a bit strange, but again, trust me: Cornstarch. A good, gentle cornstarch powder at least once a day really does work wonders. I use: Johnson's Baby Powder, Pure Cornstarch with Aloe & Vitamin E 15 oz (425 g)
I find if I skip any of these steps, I'll have flair-ups, but if I consistently follow all four, I'm fine, and that's a big relief.
