I purchased this in December 2008 for two reasons: my wife is dealing with arthritis in her hands, which makes handling small items that require grip strength difficult, and I too have begun to notice some wrist pain after a long day of work.
The reviews were generally positive, and I had to decide between a plastic model and stainless. I chose plastic, as the white matched our cabinets, and I have not been disappointed.
Essentially, this is a molded piece of plastic with a channel cut into the underside. The channel narrows as it curves toward a knurled steel knob. At some point, the lid will lodge or jam in the channel, when it hits the knob. Now, you simply rotate the jar. With less force than it takes to perform single-handedly, you will loosen the lid and turn it perhaps an inch or so, making it loose enough to unscrew the rest of the way by hand.
Probably the hardest operating aspect of the product is that you mount it to the underside of the cabinet, so unless you're a bit shorter than that height, you do have to figure out "where the device is" when you go to open a jar. For now I just bend down a bit, but I'm thinking of making some sort of mark or other indication on the edge of the cabinet where the jar lid enters the channel. Something subtle and not too unattractive.
My wife recently told me she's used it several times recently, and has found it handy. As we grow older together, that's exactly what I like to hear, that I've found another useful tool for making our lives easier.
