Customer Reviews of Uplift Technologies DL930 Day-Light 10,000 Lux SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) LampCustomer Review: Very good SAD lamp Summary: 4 Stars
The Uplift Technologies DL930 is a very good SAD lamp. The case and stand are well designed. Internal heat caused a minor discoloration on the back of the unit after the first use. The lamp does not get too hot for safety or to easily pick up - this was just a minor discoloration of the paint.
The light is white and bright, as it should be.
The instruction manual is clearly written in good English. Diagrams clearly illustrate how to assemble and use the lamp.
The manufacturer recommends using the lamp at eye level, tilted at 15 degrees, for 30 minutes in the morning. I found it is reasonably comfortable to read the newspaper or a book while using the lamp.
My unit arrived in perfect condition.
My only question is whether it eliminates the mild depression I have been experiencing during the winter, especially in late January and February. I suppose I'll never know. Even if I'm not depressed this year, it could always be the placebo effect. Give Uplift Technologies points for honesty. In their manual, they specifically state that effectiveness has not been clinically proven. YMMV.
Customer Review: Go Towards the Light!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a very dramatic history with depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxitey disorder, self harm and a personality disorder. I went off my medicine completely a few months ago because my husband and I want to start trying for a baby. 2 of my doctores recommeneded looking into the light therapy. I live in Northwest Ohio, and it gets so dark out here so early in the day. Anyway, I researched the lights and even though this one seemed bulky, I ordered it. It is increadible! I have racing thoughts and 20 minutes under this light and they quiet. Everyone is different, so you kind of have to play with the time length you are under it. I started out with 20 minutes and then tried 30, just the 10 minute increase got me hyper, not manic or anything, just hyper. I don't drink pop or coffee so the jitters were different for me. But not bad. So I've had the light for over a month now and I use it twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the evening before bed. It calms my mind. The only down size it is bulky, not heavy or anything, just akward. But once I realized what it does for me the size doesn't bother me at all!
Customer Review: Morning fogginess gone! Summary: 5 Stars
I have restless legs syndrome, and although the medication I'm on effectively relieves the symptoms and allows me to sleep, it's still hard to get going in the morning. I'm a physician, and study sleep's effect on the brain, especially memory and learning. There are several excellent research studies documenting light therapy's effectiveness for depression and seasonal affective disorder. I don't have those, but from the first day of using this light, after 30 minutes the feeling of morning fuzziness is completely and consistently taken away. I feel normally and fully awake, and each evening have a normal feeling of sleepiness like I used to. I chose this specific light because it provides 10,000 lux of brightness, is UV filtered, and can adjust to provide the light from above eye-level at a 15 degree level as the research studies recommend. It was also the best-priced unit I could find. Mother nature (imitated) and increasing my brain's levels of serotonin and decreasing melatonin, just as it's intended to, and making my days more productive. Next is exercise!
Customer Review: The jury is still out. Summary: 3 Stars
I read all the reviews on this and was really excited to get this product to help with SAD. I paid about $150 but thought it was worth it. Unfortunately after using it dilagently for 10 solid days the only change that I noticed was that it really messed up my diet! I was hungry all the time! I had been doing so well and had been at such a steady weight for about 2 years and then I use this light for 10 days and suddenly I'm up 3 pounds then 5 pounds! So I quit using it but it took several weeks for my body to readjust but now I'm not hungry all the time anymore. Too bad because I was really looking forward to the benefits of the light like not being tired all of the time and having more energy and getting more done and being more myself but I didn't notice any of that. I still felt like I needed a nap, I still had a hard time getting up in the morning, I didn't notice a mood change. The only difference I noticed was my hunger lever. I was very dissappointed. I'm glad it works for some people but it did not work for me.
Customer Review: Sunshine in a box Summary: 4 Stars
Acting on the suspicion that my wife may have a mild form of SAD, I began researching day-light lamps and finally settled on this one after a couple of weeks of searching around.
Results: We've been using the lamp for about 2 months now and though it's hard to say we can attribute it directly to the lamp, we both are definitely more energetic and generally happier than we were last winter. It's especially great for us because we live in an apartment that gets virtually no sunlight thanks to the fantastic view of the 8 story building next to us. It think this was money well spent.
As for the smell problem mentioned in an earlier review, I have a fairly sensitive nose (so much so that my constant complaints bug my wife) and have yet to notice anything.
Word of caution: Take the manufacturer instructions seriously about how overuse can lead to irritability. I OD'd a bit when we first got it and ended up having some serious anger management issues on those days...
