Customer Review: Great light with major design flaw

I bought this last year and have been using it every morning. I think that it has definitely helped my SAD and sleeping patterns. HOWEVER, my only complaint is that the legs on this thing are terribly designed. They stay in place by tightening a twist knob which becomes loose every day. If I forget to fix it the thing falls over, many times on my head but often on my hardwood floor. I'm surprised I haven't broken it yet (which I suppose is a testament to the rest of it being a quality product). The legs articulate separately, which is good if you have it on your lap, but bad for actually standing dependably without falling over. I think that the knobs should have used a clicking mechanism to keep them in place, and maybe a detachable curved cross-bar to prevent the legs from rotating separately (which could fit over the lap also).

I'm a counselor, and I first heard about using light boxes to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder years ago. This year I decided to try it for myself for the long Wisconsin winters, and I am very pleased with the results. Using this light box for half an hour every morning helps me feel alert and gives me energy to get through each day. I've been using it since October (it's now nearly January), and I can really notice the difference. For the first time in years I don't feel like I want to hibernate. This product has the amount of Lux recommended by clinical trials, and also has UV protection. I researched many light boxes before deciding on this one, and I found this one to be the best one available that has all the recommended features within a reasonable price range. I just ordered this a couple of weeks ago, and the light box came intact. All of the bulbs were fine... it was easy to put together... the stand was great for me... all seemed to be wonderful -- until I used it. For some reason, this unit emits the most offensive smell. I thought perhaps because it was new, so I gave it a couple of tries. Blech! It smells like burnt plastic or hot metal or something. It's a very toxic, unpleasant smell that truly permeates our entire home. Even my husband commented on how hard it was to be in the same room with me while I had it on. I'm a bit squeamish now about sitting so close to it, plus it takes a good hour or two for the smell to fade. I'm bummed, because it seems to work well and do what it's supposed to! But now I feel like I wasted $120. Did anyone else have this issue? I'm really not pleased at all...Customer Review: Light is fine

I haven't had a SAD lamp before so I don't have an experience to compare. However, I like the size of the lamp which provided the maximum effect. The base could be designed better for more stability, but it works fine. Place it on something sturdy and it'll be okay. I also like that the leg height is adjustable and so it the lamp portion. I haven't traveled with it, but it doesn't seem travel-friendly unless you're driving or disassemble the legs. If you do that, I would suggest taking it as carry-on. It's too expensive to place in a baggage compartment. I started feeling more energized and in a better mood after about two weeks of daily usage (30 minutes, once per day in the mornings). Consult with doctor or counselor to determine the time that's best for you. Overall, I don't have anything negative to say about it; worth the money.Customer Review: DIDN'T SEE A DIFFERENCE

I bought this light because I suffer from insomnia/depression and sleep distrbances. I also am tired all the time and my sleep clock is so late that I am sleeping during the day and up most the night. The light is very easily put together and does not smell like some reviews indicated. It is a bright white light which is easy to work by.It does seem to help me wake up better as the bright light is, well, eye opening.
The bad news is that it has not impacted my sleep at all. Nor has it made me sleepier any earlier in the evening. I have not gotten any extra energy either.
The other observation that I've made is that any bright light would probably give the same effect. There are 3 uv lights under this panel and from what I understand, there is nothing pharmecudical or different about them than any other bright light.
