Customer Review: Great desk light

My favorite halogen desk lamp purchased in 1993 finally petered out, and I fretted over finding a good replacement. I work from home, and spend at least twelve hours a day at my desk in a windowless office. Most of the lamps at my local store either looked goofy or were way too big for my desk, and I worried that the light output I viewed when in the store wouldn't correlate to what I'd need at my desk. On a whim, I bought this lamp, and have been happy with it so far. The light is very flicker-free and natural, and I have no eyestrain problems with it. There's no single bright spot, probably because of the built-in diffuser, and it doesn't emit any weird noise or interference like a lot of fluorescents do. My only minor complaint is that the base does take up a bit of footprint on my desk - it would be nifty if it included some sort of pencil holder or change tray or something, but maybe I'll duct tape some sort of aftermarket cupholder on there. I bought this light when I started my new job where my desk has NO natural light - actually our entire work area is missing natural light - so I wanted something bright but not the usual crappy fluorescent bulbs.
I've never actually bought a natural light lamp like this but it works fantastic. After spending a week on the job in what felt like a dark cave (which made me SUPER drowsy after lunch each day) it really made a difference. I literally felt more alert for the entire day and even felt better in the early evening. I guess what they say about natural light really IS true - it absolutely does help your energy level.
I'd give this 5 stars except its a pretty ugly looking lamp. It didn't make much of a difference for me since I was using it at work but I would never buy this for my home. Maybe Verilux will come out with a nicer design or at least upgrade the plastic to a nickle finish or something.
Customer Review: Nice, but lacking brightness for my close-up work

After reading the reviews and comparisons on the manufacturers web site, I thought I had found the perfect lamp to spend my many tedious hours examining fingerprints with.
Needless to say, I was quite disappointed to find that this lamp lacked the brightness that I had thought it would have. Even though this lamp has a two-way switch that enables one to change between a high & low lamp output... I found that I had to have the lamp closer to my work than I wanted in order to achieve the brightness that I required.
I also found the base to be somewhat "tippy" when the light portion of the lamp was not adjusted parallel the base.
In fairness to the manufacturer, this lamp did cast an even light that was comfortable to to read under for extended periods of time.
Would I buy this lamp again... probably not, especially at the retail prices they are selling for.
Customer Review: Suffers severe suckage

We are very disappointed in this lamp. We paid a higher price for it a year ago. We found that it was stiff and difficult to adjust. It is big and ugly. It is not well-made- cheesy plastic. The light bulbs were hard to change. We didn't get the sense of any "full-spectrum" light.
The good news is that after less than a year, it just stopped working. Now we have an excuse to throw it out and try again, with anything other than Verilux.
(Although, strange as it may seem, the big yellow Verilux shop light I have in the basement works just fine. Maybe they should stick to industrial lighting, and steer clear of the bedrooms of the world...)

Aside from it being larger than I expected, the lamp is great. The neck is flexible to angle where I want it to direct the light; there's a high/low setting; and it doesn't blind my co-workers when I have it on. In fact, you can't tell it's even on until you enter my cubicle-domain.
The light itself is pleasant and MUCH better than the over-head florescent lighting...and even if those are on, I still turn on my desk lamp to give extra brightness to my desk.
I highly recommend it for desk/bedside table lamps, just make sure you understand how large the base is (in case you have space limitations).
