My girls are 14 months old and we have been using the same Vicks Vaporizer since my girls were around 2 months old, they both got colds so my husband picked one of these up at our local store.
It started steaming in a few minutes and there was a lot of steam. We had our girls at the Dr and he said it was only a virus so he said we could give them saline nose drops & use a vaporizer. Having a vaporizor really does make a difference when you have a cold and since there is not usually a lot you can do for babies I definately recommend getting one. The 1st night they got sick & we didn't have the vaporizor my girls coughed a lot more but once we had it they coughed a lot less.
Since then my girls have been sick what seems like close to a Billion times. This has been used a ton of times & we've never had a problem with it, always heats up fast & gives lots of steam.
Helpful things we use when our girls are sick since you can't give babies many things.
*Vaporizer-safe for any age
*Saline Nose Drops-we used @ 2 months but you should ask your Dr
*Vicks BABYRub-3 months & up
*Johnsons Soothing Vapor Bath-3 months & up
*Hylands C-Plus Cold Tablets-1 year & up
The 1 Gallon Vaporizer usually doesn't have enough water to steam all night(my girls sleep 11-12hrs) but it steams enough the majority of the night when I think they need it most(if you want it to steam longer buy the 1 1/2 gallon vicks). If I go in their room during the night I can tell a HUGE difference compared to our room, their room is comfy/warm & easy to breathe
***If this doesn't steam within 10 minutes all you have to do is add salt. Also, if you get buildup or residue inside all you have to do is soak it in white vingar-DO NOT PLUG IT IN-we had some buildup when I let this sit with water for over a month(I forgot) so I soaked it in vinegar water for several hours & rinsed it very well. It was pretty clean with very minor residue left inside. Had I let it soak in the vinegar longer it would have gotten all of it out, that is what I remember my parents doing when I was little.

My three year old Holmes warm mist humidifier was still going strong when I accidently dropped the water container in my garage in transit to use it between my Mom and I's house for a weekend visit and cracked a hole in it. Knowing it replacing the container may not be possible and/or take too long or be too much money I ran out and got this one so I would not be without warm mist at night which I need badly. Well, I just got it all set up and yes, it works just fine giving out a nice fine warm mist for beside my bed like always but there is no way I will be able to sleep with it on! It just makes a complete RACKET! If not for the gurgling sputtering sound the up and down wave of it might sound like ocean waves (I wish) but it just amazes me how noisy it is. I am taking it back tomorrow and spending more money like I should have in the first place to get the newer model similar to the one I own. Now some people may find the noise it makes comforting. It certainly would not bother me during the day too much. Lastly, the power cord get HOT. The Holmes never gets that hot, but produces the same amount of warm steam, for the same amount of time, quietly.Customer Review: Works poorly

I use this vaporizer in my kids' room when they have a cold or flu by adding the Vicks/Kaz medicine. It takes a long time to release steam and smell the medicine. It also does not go through the water very quickly. I can leave it on constantly for days and the water level will not drop very much. I tried adding salt but it makes little difference, without adding too much. I used to have the larger 1.5 gallon version and it warmed up faster, used up the water quicker, and created a stronger menthol smell (when adding the medicine). I do not think it is a problem with the brand, perhaps just the particular model or even the particular machine. Maybe it is meant to work on a low setting because it is advertised as being used in the nursery--near the baby? I need a second vaporizer to use in my room and I'm really not sure if I want to give this model a second chance or buy the bigger one again.Customer Review: Very basic model, it works, but no frills!

It works quite well and keeps the air moist. It also makes very little noise. However, I ended up replacing it with a more expensive($49) model. Here are some of the features I would have liked.
1. There is no easy way to tell how much water is left, short of popping the top off. More expensive models let you see how much water is left. This was the most annoying feature for me.
2. To replace the water, you have to take the top off, set it to the side, and carry the bottom part to a water source. More expensive models let you detach a water holder and fill that.
3. On switch is on the cord. It just makes me nervous handling water and reaching for the power cord.
However, it does do the job! If you want more features, get a more expensive model. If not, this is a great device for the price.

I love this Vaporizer. I am surprised with all the bad reviews.
I am on my 3rd one (one got lost when we moved, and the bunny chewed the cord on the 2nd one). I add 1/8 teaspoon of salt and we get 14-16 hours of steam. I dont get any noise from it asside from the occasional bubbling which is tons quieter then our fishtank. I had black stuff in the water with the 1st unit but we had public water. We are on well water and have not had any problems at all. Going on over 2 yrs with this one and still works just fine. It goes from room to room as needed for coughs and colds. When we really get sick, I add Kaz vapors to the well and it makes a huge differnce. If this one goes, I will definetly purchase another one.
