Customer Reviews of Vicks Personal Steam InhalerCustomer Review: Helps pneumonia recovery Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great little steamer. I am recovering from pneumonia due to inactivity following leg surgery.
In two days of use (3x daily for about 5 minutes) I feel MUCH better. It produces just the right amount of steam. The reservoir which I thought was too small will produce 15-20 minutes worth of steam with just a couple of ounces of tap water. Cleaning takes seconds, just let it cool and wipe it out with a clean towel.
Those who complain about it spilling water should have tried reading the instructions which clearly state that it must be placed on a solid surface and that water spillage IS likely if you don't. I have mine on a mobile computer cart next to my bed and lean over the unit with no problem at all. Medicated pads are a cute idea but it is pure steam that has the greatest benefit to respiration. $30 on this was worth more than the $50 I've had to spend on antibiotics and Mucinex so far.
Customer Review: Great help after quitting smoking! Summary: 5 Stars
This little thing is amazing! A month after I quit smoking, I was feeling a lot worse, which is apparently normal. I was having a hard time with shortness of breath and with getting the rumble out of my chest, instead I would have a dry/painful cough. I just about freaked out, went to my gynecologist. Long story short, the doc gave me antibiotics, had an appointment with gyno the day after and he is the one that gave me the best advice. He said to take mucinex and get one of those steam inhalers. I got this one and used it everynight for about three weeks. It gave me instant gratification, my lungs started to let go of the crap from 14 years of smoking. I still use it when I feel out of breath. I bought it 6 months ago and it's still kickin! I just bought another one for my dad who just quit smoking a month ago and started running into the same breathing/cough problems. Luck to you pop!
Customer Review: Possible safety hazard Summary: 1 Stars
I have been using the unit for about three weeks now. It performs as advertised, however the unit's base began to crack and fall apart after about a week and a half. I salvaged the cord, heater pot and switch and fabricated a new case. Also, I have been putting three drops of cinnamon, thyme, and clove essential oils each in the water with excellent results. This wiped out my chronic sinusitis in just three days. This result came after three months involving four rounds of antibiotics and four steroid tapers. I know that Vick's cautions against this, but I think that they just want to sell their expensive vapor pads. It is interesting to note that the substance on the vapor pads is thyme extract. I got my essential oils from Ananda Apothecary online. Please note that you should close your eyes when inhaling oil infused steam, and rinse your face with cold water when you are done.
Customer Review: better choices for me ... Summary: 3 Stars
i bought this because i have chronic dry nose / sinuses.
first, you can easily burn yourself with this thing. when it is warmed up, putting your face all the way onto it *will* burn you. scalding your nostrils is no joke. it needs to have a longer stem portion or something. i'm surprised they aren't getting sued.
other than that, it works, but there are better options, for me at least. a small ultrasonic humidifier is about the same price and produces more, denser vapor that is easier to inhale as it is cool. it also holds more water and can be used generally as a humidifier for a room, where this one cannot as it holds only enough water for 10 minutes or so and it must be watched closely to ensure it hasn't run dry. it won't automatically shut off it just sits there cooking itself.
Customer Review: Headache Relief Summary: 5 Stars
My wife bought this little steam inhaler for me a few years back because she thought it might help relieve my headaches after I noticed that a long, hot shower would bring me pain relief. A real miracle in my opinion! I don't know what kind of headaches I get (sinus? maybe) but whenever they're bad, I use this little guy, and I would say 95% of the time, within 20 minutes of inhaling the steam, the headache is GONE. I can't say this will work for your headaches, but it has for me and it lets me start functioning again. Just be careful when you first use it - you need to adjust the opening for the right amount of steam and gauge how close you get to the facepiece so you don't burn yourself, because the water is literally boiling. I'm ordering another one for the office. Good luck!
