I purchased two of these units from Target for asthma, dry sinuses/congestion and dry skin (Colorado is a desert). I thought the filter free aspect would be easy as I'm awful with maintaining humidifiers. I was basically looking for something low-maintenance that allowed me to control the humidity. My previous humidifiers have caused either condensation over everything and a sopping wet surface next to the unit or no humidity at all.
The first day or two, it made my home really humid, so I decreased the output and my sinuses and skin felt great and I was able to adjust the humidistat to maintain a good comfortable level. I didn't mind the noise- I like white noise when I'm sleeping. I could tolerate the bright blue light because it was a small sacrifice for a good humidifier. The surfaces near the unit were dry.
It is now day 3. I will be returning these humidifiers after my replacements arrive based on the following (all apply to both units):
1) I can no longer see the mist, even on the highest humidity setting at the highest output (it clearly states you should). I put my face over it and feel a few droplets. But it's obviously not working.
2) Unless I have it on the highest humidity setting, the unit says, "Desired humidity" and turns off. Well, my sinuses are on fire, so I KNOW it's not doing anything.
3) FYI- The unit doesn't automatically shut off when the water is gone. I can't see where it advertises it does, so I must have assumed it did based upon the "auto shut off" with the humidistat feature.
4) Now that I'm annoyed with the functioning of the unit, the blue light is like a bright neon sign searing my retinas through my eyelids at night.
5) Filter Free doesn't mean maintenance free. You'll have to work at keeping it clean. This involves: emptying the water from the tank and base daily. Weekly cleaning. And weekly cleaning + thorough drying at end of season or not in use for a week. I haven't had to do this yet, but I can see how it would be a pain to keep clean as you can't get to part of it.
6) When you have to set it to the highest output to get ANY humidity, it really is loud. Like a fan on medium. When I had it at a lower setting, it wasn't bad at all.
