Customer Reviews of Wahl 79524 24-Piece Deluxe Hair Clipper Kit

Customer Review: Great bang for the buck!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used this twice so far on myself and love it. Good deal from Amazon who had the best deal on the kit. It's nice and solid & professional feeling even though it's not part of the Wahl professional line. Other than the guards it comes with a host of other items, some of which I may never use, but it's certainly not short on accessories. The blade cuts nicely and even if it only lasts 6 months I will have made out. As other overcritical reviewers have pointed out, yes you may have to go over an area more than once or at different angles especially with the longer guards, but I just accept this as normal behavior figuring hair is funny that way. Haven't tried playing with the DVD yet so cannot comment on that but it's fairly self explanatory IMO.

For me even know i kind of spike up my hair & gel it back, I prefer a normal mans hair cut length with shorter sides. No militant hair cut here... The kit's longest guard is 1" and is not long enough for my top & bangs. So for like $7 shipped (which seemed to be the best deal around) i purchased separately the #10 (1 1/4") & #12 (1 1/2") guards directly from Wahl. It was also cheaper shipping wise to do it by phone rather than their website. Amazingly enough ½" more makes a big difference going from the #8 and I have a normal mans haircut on top & front, but shorter on the sides & back #2 thru #4. In the end it works out perfectly and I couldn't be happier!! Nice case to tuck it all away in too.

The great part is after using it twice I've already more than broke even from what my hair stylist used to charge me, plus I don't have to go anywhere or make appointments, ect... Takes me about 15 minutes to cut my hair with it and I'm happy as a clam. I think it has like a 3 or 5 year warranty as well and Wahl is a great company who stands behind their products. Definitely a recommended buy

Update ----
I've had this 3 years now and I've never had a problem with it ever. Totally a great product and if / when it dies I'll gladly buy another. Great set of clippers!

Customer Review: Big savings for Do it Yourselfers
Summary: 5 Stars

I actually do not own these exact clippers, but I do own an ancient ancestor. I just want to endorse the do-it-yourself idea and this general line of Wahl products. I bought them about 20 years ago to cut my boys hair. They were 4 and 6 and wanted a "buzz" cut for the summer. I figured these clippers would pay for themselves the first time or two that I didn't take them to the barber. That became their new summer style until they got to be teenagers. I even clipped the dog with them twice.

Around 12 years ago, I had lost enough of my own hair that I decided to go that way myself. I do it more or less weekly. I find it's no problem to put on the #2 spacer and just go against the grain everywhere on my head. I just angle the clippers and trace around my ears to make that look more finished. On the back of my head, I just repeat several times and work from one side to the other, sort of like mowing a lawn so I don't miss spots.

I usually enlist my wife to shave the back of my neck. It can be done with a hand mirror held behind my head with one hand, and the clippers in the other hand while looking in the bathroom mirror, but that is a little tricky since everything is reversed.

The original combs, bibs, brushes, oil, and other accessories were lost, worn out, or used up long ago. I bought a bottle of clipper oil that will last the rest of my life and the clippers just keep right on buzzing.

I figure that I have used my clippers for well over 500 haircuts. It started to pull hairs a bit around two years ago, and the cord was beginning to crack. The blades were just dull. Replacement blades and a cord were available from Wahl at a very reasonable cost, and changing both out was easy with just a screwdriver. Problems solved and apparently I am set for another 10 years.

I think I paid $12 + $3 tip the last time I paid a barber. If I had continued to pay $15 per cut my 500+ haircuts would have cost me over $7,500. My kit cost me about $25 back in the day. Nice savings!

Customer Review: decent clipper for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

It was time to replace an old cordless all-in-one Panasonic, and after a nightmare experience with a cordless Andis (see separate review) we decided to go for a simple, robust, no frills corded model. We followed the reviews and ordered the Wahl 79524, and we're quite pleased.

Pros:
* Strong engine, sharp blades, smooth operation. It cuts without effort through the thickest of hair (mine), and glides through thinner hair like butter. It is fairly easy to get a nice, even haircut within minutes.
* Comprehensive set of combs, brushes, and even lubricating oil and scissors, all packed in a convenient firm box.
* Fairly long cable.
* Relatively quiet (compared to the Andis); blades remain cool throughout haircut.

Cons:
* Most significant one: the "naked" blade is useless at trimming edges (neck, beard line, etc). I fall back to the gentle Panasonic trimmer to do that job.
* It is on the heavier side, but still reasonably convenient to hold.
* Strong vibrations, takes a good grip to keep it going straight.
* Power button not the most convenient I've seen... at least it takes some time to get used to.
* It is, well... corded ;-)

Bottom line: after 5-6 haircuts, I believe this is a well-built, solid and simple clipper for the low-budget consumer. Good choice for us anyways!

UPDATE 7/2010: nearly 3 years later, the clipper is still going strong. It survived a few drops, one actually bended a metal piece but I managed to bend it back, and it actually works fine since then! Be sure to clean it and oil it after every use, and it'll last long enough to justify its modest cost. Great product.

Customer Review: Sounds Like a Jackhammer- Cuts Like a Chainsaw!
Summary: 1 Stars

First impression: as other reviewers have stated- "Wow this thing is heavy! It must be professional grade! And look at all these cool accessories!"

Upon closer inspection: the "chrome" part is just a silver painted area of the cheap plastic shell. I dont know what makes this trimmer so heavy, but quality definitely plays no part. Also, the accessories are a joke- they are made from some kind of super thin and brittle plastic that holds up under only the most gentle treatment. I threw away the scissors after I discovered that they would not cut paper, let alone my thick red hair.
Oh- and the cheapo little storage box it all comes in; I challenge anybody to fit all the accessories back in there (without breaking any of them) and post the video! I am not sure it is even possible.

Actual performance: The clippers worked tolerably well once. Even that first time was rough going, constantly having to stop and unclog or re-oil the blades- but at least they worked. By the second use however, they were starting to get dull so it took almost an hour to trim my hair back to an even 3/4". On the third haircut a screw rattled its way loose and since then I have to tighten it 3-4 times per haircut or else it rattles loose and the trimmer starts to sound, and cut, like a lawnmower.

The good:
-a cheap, all inclusive hair trimming kit.

The bad:
-You have to really work to get it to cut evenly, making numerous passes
-accessories are a joke.
-trimmer is heavy and LOUD!
-blades dull very rapidly
-trimmer vibrates excessively and may shake itself apart

Customer Review: Very nice set
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used this clipper twice since I bought it, and had good results both times. I am not a hairdresser by any means... my children would turn and run if I came after their hair with scissors! However, since one child likes his hair pretty short and was wanting haircuts every few weeks, I decided to give these a try. The kit comes in a nice, sturdy case to keep everything together. There is a DVD that gives you a short lesson in giving a good, simple haircut. After watching it once I felt fairly confident. Since I was so new to cutting hair, I decided to begin with the longest attachment first, figuring it's better to "practice" with longer hair. Once I got the feel of it, it was pretty easy. Since I experimented with several lengths, it did take a while, but I was very pleased with the result, as was my son.

I found the clipper itself very easy to use. The attachments come on and off easily. It was easy to clean. It was nice and lightweight, and I had no problems with the unit becoming too hot. The "cape" that's included is nothing more than a garbage bag with strings... it broke before I could even tie it around his neck! However, I didn't buy the kit for the cape, so it really didn't matter.

I am very pleased with this purchase. It will have paid for itself with the next haircut, and hopefully will save me a considerable amount of money on professional haircuts.
