Customer Reviews of Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman Beard and Mustache TrimmerCustomer Review: The worst beard trimmer I have ever purchased. Summary: 1 Stars
After going through much of the reviews on Amazon about this product I decided to go ahead and purchase it. BIG MISTAKE! Since the first time I used it, I hated it. It does not trim the hair evenly, the blades (or whatever those tiny toothed things are) pull hair which is not very pleasant at all. It takes forever for me to get my desired result because the trimmer has to be held at particular uncomfortable angles and I have to go over the same spot several times.
The attachments are rickety and made of the cheapest plastic out there. They are not easy to 'attach' ! The only good thing I can think of so far is that the charging lasts which if it didn't, I would have thrown this not so economically priced piece of junk out the window after the first time I used it.
Guys, if you have a thick beard, do not waste your time or your money on this. Sub-standard and a complete utter waste. I am sick of hearing stuff like 'well, this suits me fine because I don't have a very thick beard.'
Thick or fine, the people designing these products should really consider all possibilities and types out there. A beard trimmer should do the job, whether the beard is thick/normal/fine.
Customer Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
This is an upgraded product from Wahl. They took their Groomsman and made it much better but not quite perfect. The Pros: Easy to use. Comes with easy to use attachments for trimming to any desired length. Well balanced. Extra button on the switch insures that when I pack it for a short trip, it doesn't get turned on and arrive with no charge left. Easy to clean. Stays sharp. It can run on either the power/charging cord or cordless when charged.
In fact there is just one element to this trimmer which holds it back from being perfect.
Cons: Eventually the trimmer just doesn't hold a charge as well. It took almost two years before I became unhappy with it's charging capacity. It would have been nice to be able to buy a replacement battery but there are no instructions for doing so. The old Groomsman trimmers opened easily so a replacement battery could be inserted. Now I have the choice of using it only as a corded trimmer or replacing it with a new trimmer.
I elected to buy another Groomsman 9918-6171. As I said, it is almost perfect and so few things in life are perfect.
Customer Review: Here's a SIMPLE FIX for getting to 2-day stubble-length Summary: 4 Stars
As much as I liked this trimmer which I recently purchased, I was also disappointed that the many length options did not include something as short as what others called a 2-day stubble length. I spoke with Wahl's Customer Service representative and she acknowledged knowing of the complaint and assured me that she would renew her request that their designers address this complaint. I cannot award 5 stars until this shortcoming is resolved.
On the other hand, I EASILY CURED THE PROBLEM with a sheet if fine sandpaper. Put your 6-position head on your trimmer (turned off) and with it set at 2 or 3, while pointed down, rub the plastic ridges across the sandpaper which is resting face-up on a smooth hard surface. Keep testing the plastic ridge length as you sand until the plastic at SETTING 1 is at the same height as the end of the trimmer's teeth. Finish by sanding off any sharp points and go enjoy your new stubble length trimmer.
Ha-ha. Maybe Wahl should include a small piece of sandpaper in their shipment. Then Amazon would need a 4 1/2 star rating.
Customer Review: Not as good as my Norelco Summary: 2 Stars
I'm not impressed.
I got this to replace my venerable Norelco T860. After 5 years or so of service, the Norelco conked out, and its only modern analog from Norelco, the T980 has a goofy vacuum feature that sounded like a gimmick to me. So I bought this Wahl.
It takes way more passes over the same spot with the Wahl to get my beard to look even close to uniform length. And it still can't get the same uniformity as the Norelco T860 did. The Wahl is also narrower, so it's more passes over the same spot and more passes still to cover the whole beard, so it just takes a lot longer to use.
Also, the adjustable length attachment on the Wahl doesn't lock in place very well, so it slipped a couple of times and left short spots.
I gave up and bought the Norelco T980 with the goofy vacuum and "turbo" features. It is gimmicky as predicted, but it works a lot better than the Wahl for trimming my beard, so I can overlook all the silly business.
Customer Review: Great trimmer for the money Summary: 4 Stars
After dropping/breaking my Conair unit (the one with the pointless "Turbo" button), I was looking for something a little better. This unit fits the bill quite nicely.
I first noticed that it's really sturdy and doesn't have that "cheap plastic" feel like other similarly priced units. After using it for the first time I could immediately tell that it cuts really well and the blades are sharper, faster, and closer together than my previous trimmer, so there is no tugging/pulling of hairs.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because, as mentioned before, it really is pretty loud given the fast blade speed and the attachments don't really connect all that well. Luckily I have no need for them, but if I did, I'm sure they'd break pretty quickly just from routine use.
Other than that, it's a solid trimmer and I would definitely recommend it to others.
