Customer Review: Great Idea, but Not Reliable

I ordered this clock because I was looking for a dawn simulator and didn't want to spend the outrageous $$ that most of the others cost. Initially I decided to run it on the AC power alone, but found that the slightest movement made the AC connector move just enough to reset the time, alarm, etc. to the factory defaults. Adding batteries eventually helped with this problem, but should not have been necessary.
I settled on a nature sound that wasn't too offensive for the wake-up (spring forest I think, with cricket-like humming punctuated by little frog noises) and a time period for the light to brighten up before the alarm went off. The first few mornings it did get me up, albeit earlier than I wanted - I must be sensitive to the light. After about a week, the light flickered at half-intensity for the entire "dawn" period, then went on full strength when the alarm went off. A day later, there was no gradual brightening period at all, and by the next day neither the light nor the alarm went off. Fortunately I kept my other alarm as backup.
If the clock had worked reliably, I would recommend it despite its looking rather cheap. The gradual brightening of the room really helps me wake up peacefully and I am not a morning person. The clock has a lot of good features but they're only good if they work, so I have to recommend that you NOT buy it. Looks like Amazon already had that idea as the clock is no longer available.
At this point, I'd like to register a complaint about the prices of these dawn simulator-type alarm clocks. It looks like you have to pay $125 and up for one that will work properly, and they all look cheaper than what they cost. I think it's a case of "because they can" pricing due to the market still being so limited.
