Customer Reviews of Waterpik Waterflosser Cordless PLUSCustomer Review: Great product, even for "problem" teeth Summary: 5 Stars
I have never used a Water Pik of any kind before buying this product. I have crooked teeth and am constantly getting food caught that needs to be flossed out. I bought this "water flosser" with some skepticism -- I kind of doubted that it would be able to get the trapped food particles out from between my crooked teeth as well as string floss does. Immediately after using the Water Pik Waterflosser Cordless Plus for the first time, I used string floss to see if anything had been missed, and surprise -- nothing was missed! I now use the Water Pik exclusively, and save the string floss for when I'm going out for lunch or something like that. It is true that I have to refill the water reservoir once or twice during each use, but it's so easy to fill that I don't consider that a problem -- takes just a couple seconds. I am planning to get braces later this month, and I had been concerned about how to floss my teeth through the braces with string floss. Now, I'll just be able to use the Water Pik with its special orthodontic tip (which comes with this model, along with several other tips). I was also hoping this item would be small enough to take along for travel. Although it ideally could be a little smaller for that use, I will definitely find room to take it along when I travel -- obviously, if it were smaller, the water reservoir would have to be refilled more often, so there is that trade-off. One thing to note: The NiMH batter in this model cannot be replaced, so if it dies after the 2-year warranty expires, you will need to replace the entire unit. To extend the battery life for as long as possible, the user manual recommends keeping the unit plugged in for charging ALL the time EXCEPT during use. I will do this to extend the life of my battery, but if it still dies after 2 years, I will gladly buy another unit. At a price of about $40, it's well worth $20 per year.
Customer Review: Disappointing Summary: 2 Stars
For a year now I've been using the Waterpik Personal Dental System. It's does the job but is noisy and cheesy looking, so I thought I'd treat myself to a nicer version and picked this one out.
First, let me say that this unit does what a Waterpik should do: clean between the teeth and under the gums, especially with gingivitis. But here's why this unit's going back to the local retailer, assuming they'll accept the return:
* The small reservoir wouldn't be such a pain if I didn't have to mix mouthwash with the water, which means handling the thing with wet and slippery hands two or three times a session while blue liquid is dripping down my chin onto my shirt.
* It's awkward to hold. It wouldn't be so bad if the ring that turns the jet were easy to get to. My countertop version has a ring on the top of the small handheld assembly so I can keep a finger on it while holding the assembly. I'd need gigantic hands to do that with this one, especially when the reservoir is full.
* There's no convenient way to store any of the attachments, even the one you prefer. The only solution is to leave the attachment plugged in. If this is really meant to be portable, I'd expect at least a ventilated travel container for the attachments.
* The reservoir's filling hole is too small to do anything more than rinse it out, and even in a dry climate it doesn't dry out between uses. Therefore I'd feel compelled to disinfect it at least once a week to prevent bacteria from growing. Who needs that?
Bottom line: It's better than nothing and portable. If I traveled a lot I'd consider keeping it. But I don't, so I'm going to see if I can find a new corded version that's maybe a little more sturdy than my old unit.
Customer Review: Poor Battery Life Summary: 2 Stars
I used the Waterpik Ultra Cordless Dental Water Jet for about 5 days. During those 5 days I found this product to be outstanding. I do not believe that this unit suffers from many of the problems that other reviewers have mentioned, especially if you keep in mind that this is a cordless travel model. At the highest pressure the tip did not move unless I accidentally brushed the tip against my gum or tooth. The water reservoir holds just about the right amount of water for a quick cleaning and refilling it is quite easy if you need a more thorough one. Ergonomically it easily fit into my hand and I have small hands. It never leaked and most importantly my teeth and gums felt really clean afterwards.
The big problem - and it's a deal breaker - is the battery and the concomitant lack of customer service from Waterpik dealing with this problem. I initially charged this unit for a full 24 hours prior to first use (Waterpik suggests 16 hours). Using it twice a day with one full water reservoir each time it lasted 5 days. After that time the battery would not hold a charge.
I do not doubt that this unit is defective and that others may not be experiencing the same problem. However, after reading the reviews, I have come to the conclusion that this product line has a defect with its battery - both in the longevity of the battery and its ability to recharge. Read the reviews and see how many people mention some kind of battery problem. I have attempted to contact Waterpik on several occassions regarding the battery via email and telephone and still have not received a reply.
I love the potential of this specific unit, especially for travel, but with its likely battery problems and total lack of customer support, I would not recommend buying it.
Customer Review: Bad never felt so good. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought my Waterpik Ultra last night and was sad that I was asked to charge it 24 hours prior to first use. But I followed orders and waited patiently until this evening. I just used it for the first time and it was a total mess. I sprayed the walls, the mirror, my face. I forgot to keep my lips parted and ended up spitting water everywhere. I don't think I was holding it at the right angle so water poured down my arm and the sleeve of my sweatshirt is soaked. Since it was my first time, I have no idea if I was doing it wrong, or if it's just difficult to manage, but even after all that I still LOVE IT.
Since I've only used it once, I'm not going to comment on the mechanics of it just yet. After a few more uses to see if it gets easier to use, I will review it again. One thing I will comment on right now though, is the water pressure. The people who said it has a weak stream either have a bad model, or gums of steel. On low pressure, it was strong and even stung my gums a couple times. I'm scared to see what high feels like!
I hate hate hate flossing. My teeth are very close together and I have to wrap floss so tightly around my fingers, they turn purple and bruise. I have to use strand after strand because my teeth shred the floss. I also have TMJ and have a hard time getting my back teeth without my jaw cramping. So even if the Waterpik is messy, and awkward, and I have to constantly refill the reservoir during a session, in my opinion it's 110% better than flossing and the fact that it's more effective is just a bonus :) I will never use standard floss again. Waterpik is my new best friend <3
Customer Review: mediocre Summary: 3 Stars
I was a happy user of WaterPik's old travel oral irrigation system, the 350W. It had a detachable tank, and the tips were connected to the pump via flexible tubing, which was of course the system's weak spot (the tubing would eventually crack). Aside from that, the system was exceptionally durable and lasted 9 years with only one change of tubing, which unfortunately is no longer available. Because of my good experience with the 350W, and because the WP-450 is rechargeable, I was inclined to prefer it over the Panasonic Oral Irrigator EW-DJ10-A.
I was wrong. The WP-450 is much bigger than the photos suggest, and rather unwieldy. It doesn't appear to be particularly well-made. It's also not inexpensive. Furthermore, there are inconveniences: for example, since the tank is detachable, one would expect to be able to fill the tank at the sink and then reattach it to the body, but the tank leaks water in this case because WaterPik didn't see fit to put a simple valve on the tank's water output. Another inconvenience which may only affect a small number of user is that although the WP-450 is described as a travel irrigator, its transformer only works with 120 VAC - the transformer that came with my 350W was dual-voltage.
I ordered the Panasonic Oral Irrigator EW-DJ10-A and found it superior to the WaterPik: a more elegant design, better construction, smaller and easier to handle. Also costs 1/3 less than the WaterPik. It only comes with one nozzle (and of only one type -- the WaterPik comes with 4 different ones), but that seems sufficient to me.
