We brought an elderly loved one home from the convalescent home.
Wandering at night (and falling during the wandering) seemed to be an issue that could make the living situation unworkable.
I recognized that the convalescent homes had alarms for this very purpose, so I decided to try to find one that worked.
I tried a few different style alarms and this style WON hands down!
The other types of alarms were glitchy. The bed pad alarm sometimes went off when nobody had been on it for hours and it often didn't go off when he got out of bed. The magnetic alarm that attaches to the patients clothes worked for a few days, but was totally annoying and my elderly relative quickly figured out several ways to disable it.
This brand of wireless alarm has a remote speaker option, which is the best thing ever! NOTE: NOT ALL WIRELESS BRANDS HAVE THIS!!!
The beep to this brand's wireless is a pleasant loud door bell chime sound, which doesn't get on my nerves at all. (The other alarms made me and my loved one want to pull our hair out.)
The other types of alarms weren't loud enough to be heard in some rooms of the house - like the laundry room in the basement or in the bathroom shower. But they woke up everyone in the neighboring rooms and beeped loudly in the patients ear until I got there, causing reactions of fear, confusion, anger and stress. My elderly loved one took to hiding those other alarms and spent his energy trying to find sneaky ways to disconnect them.
In contrast, this wireless is loud enough to wake me up (It has a loud versus soft option) and the speaker has an on / off switch, so that I can shut it off after one ring, which means that it doesn't wake up the whole household. Since it doesn't beep in my loved one's ear, unless I flip the switch from the remote speaker to the in-room speaker, it hasn't bothered him at all. No more stress, no more anger, no more confusion, no more hiding the alarms.
The remote speaker has a clip, so I can take the speaker down to the basement when I throw in the laundry and into the bathroom while I am in the shower.
I noticed that other brands of wireless alarms sold on this site, had clamps to hold the infared sensor part, but if you have a bedside table, I don't find mounting it necessary at all. I found that being able to move the direction freely is a great thing, because the first night I aimed it too close to the bed and it went off when he rolled over. If it had been mounted, it would have been more difficult to re-adjust it.
The only slight drawback is that it takes batteries, which can become expensive over time. It takes one 9-volt battery for the sensor and one for the remote speaker if you choose to use it. The on/off switch means that you can save batteries by turning both parts off when not in use.
I'm not sure how long the batteries will last yet, because I have only had it for a week, but.... even if they don't last long, it will be cheaper than sending him back to the convalescent home.
