I purchased this for my father, who was already using a wheel type pill dispenser. The trouble with the other one, is that he has to slide up a door to stop the alarm and then would forget to take the pills. I thought with this device, he'd be forced to pour the pills into his hand, and we could solve this issue. I just set up the device today for him.
During testing it out with him, there were a few times when a very small pill would get hung up inside the device because the exactly positioning of the movable tray is not precisely aligned with the cover opening. This would cause a small ledge to be created and this ledge would catch a pill and prevent it from falling out. This is why my review is three stars.
I'm also not so happy with the amount of play that is in the pill tray - you can move it back and forth without it clicking to the next setting - I had expected that for $300, this would be a precise device. It remains to be seen whether or not this works over time and I'll have to keep a close eye on it.
For those of you with medications that are very small, I'm not sure this is going to work out. I'll post an update after a little time goes by. I emailed the company about my concerns to see if by chance the one I got is defective or they are all built with a wiggly dispenser tray. I am also not sure how tightly the lid fits over the individual slots, and whether over time, as my father uses it, the pills will get mixed up - which is very serious. We filled it up and shook it an the pills stayed where they are, but it would be nice to be able to somehow prove to myself the pills wouldn't move around inside with all the shaking.
Updated 10/18/10 - after four weeks of use.
I've checked the pills very carefully each week, and the small pills do seem to be staying in their own compartments and not shifting around. One of the nice things I noticed, is that I can tell when he actually has taken them, and have been able to adjust the time so there is a shorter and shorter lag between the alarm time and the actual pill taking time. It takes up much less space on his table than our former pill machine, and so I'm satisfied.
I'm now contemplating a second purchase for my mother.
I'm not sure about this product versus the one that's $69. Not sure of the quality differences, but since it's so much cheaper than the assisted living surcharges, I'll probably buy the identical one for my mother.
